Ecotourism in Mauritius: what is it about, and what are the safety standards [Café Scientifique]

The Café Scientifique Maurice team invites you all to its next event at Flying Dodo, featuring Dr Vikash Tatayah, Conservation Director at the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF). He is responsible for all fauna and flora conservation projects and islets management in both Mauritius and Rodrigues, and is involved in conservation education and ecotourism.

Vikash will have two parts to his café talk on Ecotourism. His presentation is particularly pertinent given the recent event at Grand River South East where 4 people lost their lives.

1st part: The importance of tourism to the Mauritian economy is increasingly critical and several promoters claim to be engaged in the most rapidly growing sector of tourism, which is Ecotourism. However, how many of our businesses are really practicing what they preach? This talk examines the profiles of tourism businesses that could rightly stake a claim to Ecotourism -- or not!

2nd part: A country that depends heavily on tourism, and increasingly on Ecotourism, needs to constantly review the health and safety standards in the industry. Why should health and safety be a key consideration for ecotourism businesses?

Please help us in reaching out to as big a crowd of people as possible by kindly advertising the event on our behalf, so that many of you get to enjoy the company of each other, and engage in discussions about this important topic. Also please do not forget to use the hashtag #cafscimu in promoting this event :-)

Thank you, and hope to see many of you at Flying Dodo for the event!

About our speaker:

Dr Vikash Tatayah has been active in conservation for nearly 20 years. He trained in agronomy and then changed track to join conservation. He completed a doctoral study on the Round Island Petrel, an exceptional seabird. He manages conservation programmes in Mauritius and Rodrigues that have allowed the recovery of a long list of threatened plants and animals. He participates in fundraising for projects and public relations initiatives, is a link with the Government of Mauritius, and represents the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation on most national conservation and environment consultations. He also represents the organisation in discussions with various national and international organisations e.g. BirdLife, African Bird Club, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund, and universities. Vikash’s work is widely published and has won him several prizes locally and internationally. He is also the co-chair of the IUCN Mascarene Island Plant Specialist Group and member of several other Specialist Groups. Vikash’s vision is to make Mauritius a world reference in conservation and instil pride in every citizen for the biodiversity of the country.
